Food tours in Rome

A brief introduction to food tours in Rome

Just think about that for a moment, think about those four words: Food, Tours, in Rome. You just know it's going to be good don't you? Firstly, you've got the food: pizza, cured meats, cheese, pastries, cakes, coffee, wine, fruit, fried fish and, of course, ice cream. Eating in Rome is not just an utter pleasure, it's a journey of discovery, it's an education. You will learn that often 'less is more' and that simplicity is the key to getting the best out of the freshest, tastiest produce. A simple margherita pizza for example, made with the ripest tomatoes, the creamiest mozzarella and finished with a sprig of basil will quite simply blow your mind.

Then, there is the tour. On route you will pass through the lesser known areas of the city, little treasures that you won't find in your guide books. Look around you, look up, look down, there is so much to see as you move from one location to another, from fading frescos and crumbling columns, to the intricate detailing and the fabulously multi-coloured buildings of Rome. The Jewish ghetto is not only home to some fantastic little shops, delis and pastry shops, but also has a rich history from the old fish market to the Fontana delle Tartarughe (the turtle fountain), which was built to provide fresh water to the area. The ghetto is one of the city's most eclectic areas, and the traditional street food on offer here is not to be missed. A speciality is deep fried artichokes (carciofi alla giudia), their delightful crispy outer leaves and fleshy, soft inner heart combine to make a delicious taste combination. There are the sweet pizzas made from dried fruit, and freshly cooked baccala ('cod' to me and you).

Italian food has a justifiable reputation as being one of the best in the world, so it's just as well we are here to show you that when in Rome, you must eat as the Romans do!
